BioPharm (BPE) Fittings

7

BioPharm (BPE) tube fittings are designed and manufactured for the biopharmaceutical industry, in conventional tube OD sizes, with extended tangents to accommodate orbital weld heads, and fine ID electropolish. BPE fittings are available with Butt Weld or Tri-Clamp ends, or with both.

To understand the difference between Sanitary and BioPharm fittings, it’s helpful to know about the certifying organizations and standards.

3-A.org is the standard-setting organization in the food and beverage industries. The 3-A logo will usually appear on a fitting that’s approved for sanitary use. 3-A standards require a 32RA (150 grit) or better.
BPE is an international standard approved by the American National Standards Institute as an aid for the design and construction of equipment intended for use in the manufacturing of biopharmaceuticals.
Both 3-A and BPE fittings are sanitary grade. However, while 3-A fittings are polished to 32Ra or better, BPE fittings will have finer finishes, the most common being SF1 (PL) and SF4 (PM). As such, BPE fittings are better suited for biopharmaceutical use where impurities cannot be tolerated in the line.

  • SF1 – 20Ra Max ID Electropolish / 32Ra Max OD
  • SF4 – 15Ra Max ID Electropolish / 32Ra Max OD

For BPE fittings with one or more clamp ends, gaskets and Heavy-Duty or High-Pressure clamps complete the union. Before tightening the clamp, gaskets should be properly seated. Improper alignment is one of the leading causes of contamination and leaks. Clamps should always be tight and secure, but not overtight. An overtight clamp can lead to bulging of the gasket, which may cause it to push into the process line, creating spaces for bacteria to develop.
